In the poems penultimate line, Owen describes the suns rays as blank, or complacent. He wonders what the point was in life existence created on ea rth at all, if so many men are killed when their adult life has nevertheless just begun. The poem ends with the third rhetorical question, creating a common sense that Owen cannot lay hold of (on the purpose of life on earth if it merely leads to soldiers dying senselessly. The poignant teetotal tone is used to comprehend this loss. Owen uses the rhetorical devices of alliteration, vowel hoarfrost and rhetorical questions, to unify the theme of the poem.
